n/a: BLS did not publish an annual figure. For a few performing occupations (actors, dancers, musicians) BLS publishes only hourly wages, because those workers rarely work a full year.
The median is the middle wage: half of the workers in an occupation earn more and half earn less. At the 10th percentile, 10% of workers earn less; at the 90th, 10% earn more. The 25th to 75th percentile is the range of the middle half of workers, and it is usually the most useful band to compare a salary against.
The mean is higher than the median in most occupations, because a small number of very high earners pull the average up. Across all occupations the mean is $69,770 while the median is $50,980. When you want a typical figure, use the median.
Where you sit inside the range depends mostly on experience, employer, industry and location, none of which this national table separates. For state comparisons see the state table in our software developer guide or the BLS profile linked on each row, which breaks pay down by industry, state and metropolitan area.
BLS counts straight-time gross pay: base rate, cost-of-living allowances, guaranteed pay, hazardous-duty pay, incentive pay including commissions and production bonuses, and tips. It excludes overtime, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses (for example an annual discretionary bonus), employer-paid benefits and tuition reimbursement. Stock options and restricted stock units are not among the pay components BLS lists, so treat equity as something to add on top of these figures.
The survey covers wage and salary workers in nonfarm establishments. It does not cover the self-employed, owners and partners of unincorporated firms, private households or most of agriculture. Freelance rates are therefore not comparable with these figures.
The May 2025 estimates combine six survey panels collected over three years, so they describe pay over that period rather than pay in May 2025 alone. For occupations paid by the hour, BLS converts hourly wages to annual figures using 2,080 hours (40 hours a week, 52 weeks). Details: BLS technical notes for May 2025.
