US occupational groups, explained

Every official US wage figure belongs to an occupation, and every occupation sits in one of the major groups of the Standard Occupational Classification. Wage data is published for 22 of them: the group covering military-specific occupations is outside the survey. Those groups are the level at which government statistics are organised, so knowing which group a job sits in tells you which official figure applies to it.

This page covers those 22 groups. Each one says what the group covers, which familiar occupations sit inside it, and which similar-sounding jobs do not. The numbers under each group are read from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics file for May 2025: how many occupations the survey covers in that group, how many people work in them, and the span between the group's lowest and highest published annual median wage.

Groups matter because two jobs that sound alike can sit in different ones, and that decides which comparison is fair. A medical assistant is grouped with healthcare support, for example, while a licensed practical nurse is grouped with practitioners. A warehouse picker belongs to transportation and material moving, while a machine operator in the same building belongs to production. Reading the definition first stops you comparing a figure from one group with a figure from another.

How to read the figures

Every number here is a published BLS value or a sum of published values, and the source is U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2025, United States, national, all industries. Its scope is worth knowing before you compare groups: it covers wage and salary workers in non-farm establishments, so the self-employed are outside it, and it reports wages rather than total compensation such as employer pension contributions or health insurance. The occupation-level table with all five published percentiles is in the US wage data section, and the datasets and their limits are set out on the data sources and methodology page.
